Lee Yu-Kyung is an independent international correspondent based in Seoul, South Korea. Having been a long time media activist in South Korea, she was determined to leave the country to explore the world finding out unheard of stories by her own. Having been based in Bangkok Thailand for over a decade, she has now resettled operating at a new base in her home city Seoul from 2020.

In 2004 and onward, she has started on covering various conflicts and issues of human rights violations from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, India, Iran, Kashmir (of the both sides), Laos (‘Cluster Bombs’ in particular), Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand as well as South Korea.

Her articles and photo (essays) have been published in HanKyoReh21, SisaIn, Hankook-Ilbo, Kuki-News in South Korea, and the progressive daily <Neues Deutschland> in Germany at different times for more than a decade. Other publishers of her work include Die Wochenzeitung (Switzerland), Asia-Pacific Times (Germany) and Weekly KyungHyang (Korea). She occasionally contributes to Green Left Weekly, the Australia’s leading alternative newspaper.

In 2007, she has authored a book titled <Hope in Desperation> (in Korean), where her selected works and unreported stories from various conflict zones in Asia, were compiled. She also has co-authored <Challenge for Peace> (in Korean, 2008) for the Sri Lanka chapter of the book.

In 2010 she has translated <In the Shadow of Violence – The politics of Armed Groups>, the book written by German scholar Klaus Schlichte, into Korean. The Korean edition has been published by a publishing house HyonAmSa by a title of Who are the first movers forming Armed Groups.

In 2013, she was selected for the first grantee of the media sponsorship program of the renowned <Rhee Yeung Hui Foundation> in South Korea for her ‘Burma Project’, in which she’s extensively covered two challenging issues of Stateless Rohingya and Burma’s Muslims, and the Kachin Conflict in Northern Burma.

Since 2014 January, she’s been contributing for the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) Radio – South Korea’s public broadcasting station – as a Bangkok correspondent, and as a ‘freelance journalist’ from 2020.

이유경 기자는 아시아의 분쟁과 인권문제를 집중 취재하여 글과 사진으로 기록하는 ‘국제분쟁전문’ 프리랜서 언론인입니다. 2014년부터 1월부터 방콕 통신원 자격으로, 2020년부터는 ‘프리랜서 기자’로서 <KBS 라디오>에 태국 소식을 전하고 있습니다.

한국에서 살아온 만 30년의 마지막 9년은 언론운동단체인 <민주언론운동시민연합>에서 활동한 바 있습니다. 2003년 1월 한국을 떠나, 2004년 6월 이후로는 아프가니스탄, 버마, 인도, 이란, 카슈미르 (인도령 & 파키스탄령), 라오스 (집속탄), 레바논, 네팔, 파키스탄, 스리랑카 그리고 태국의 정치적 위기와 남부 분쟁 지역을 취재하는 등 분쟁이 양산하는  참상과 불의의 현장을 르포와 심층분석의 형태로 전해왔습니다. 2020년, 10여년 동안 베이스로 삼았던 태국 방콕 생활을 접고, 현재 서울 베이스 기자로 기고와 강연 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.

이유경 기자의 기사와 사진은 <한겨레21>, <시사인> <한국일보> <쿠키뉴스> (한국) 그리고 독일 진보 일간지 <Neues Deutschland>등에 게재돼 왔으며 한국어, 독일어, 영어권 독자들을 다양하게 만나고 있습니다. 2017년 3월 이후 한국일보 국제면 기획 ‘세계의 분쟁지역’에 연재중입니다. 2013년 6월 이유경 기자의 <버마 프로젝트 : 개혁과 민주화 이행기에 직면한 도전들>은 제 1회 <리영희 재단> 취재지원대상으로 선정되었습니다.

이유경 기자는 언론의 독립성과 자유가 심각하게 위협받는 주류독식 환경을 진실 추구와 탐사보도에 기반한 정론으로 극복할 수 있다고 믿습니다. 저서로는 <아시아의 낯선 희망들> (인물과 사상사 / 2007)와 <평화를 향한 아시아의 도전> (공저, 나남 / 2008) 가 있으며 역서로는 <누가 무장단체를 만드는가 – 원제 In The Shadow of Violence / 현암사, 2010> 가 있습니다.
